The essence of all creativity is kindness. -- Bill Purdin
In this season of flurried festivities and the urgency and pressure of gift-giving, we often forget that we have the power to create the most enduring gift of all for ourselves and others—the gift of kindness.
I just watched a little video about a baby orphan elephant who had grown old enough to move to a national park, where it will be protected for a number of years as it continues to mature. As the little elephant emerges from the van that has transported it to its new home, he is greeted by a troupe of elephants that remember him from the orphanage where they were all babies. Enfolded by gentle trunks, he is brought home again to kindness.
When we think of creativity, we understandably link it to the making of something. However, it is much more than that. We have the power to create our lives the way we want them, from moment to moment. We have the power to create kindness for ourselves and for others, from moment to moment.
Think about it. What would it be like to ask yourself in this season, “What is the next kind thing I could do for myself?” What is the next kind thing I could do for someone else?” And then just begin.
Wishing you an infinitely kind holiday season.
